I have been meaning to write this blog for a long time now. With the onset of such difficult times, it is rather stressful for us, mentally and physically. As parents and spouses, we have to manage the time we have calmly and lovingly so we can survive for a long time within the boundaries of our home. So here I have curated some Netflix shows and movies you can watch with your kids during TV time or mealtime, whichever suits you best.
- Full house – It is a pretty old family show which we used to watch back in Kuwait when I was around 7 or 8 years old. There are only 8 seasons because, as I recently researched and got to know, they ran out of money and were unable to continue shooting. Actually, I wanted to watch Fuller House and thought it would be a great nostalgic moment if I watched Full House with the kids before starting Fuller House. Fuller House, on the other hand, has a lot more kissing and light adult content which you would generally avoid watching with the kids, but then my kids barely ask questions and learned about surrogacy.
- Family reunion – This is a new family show on Netflix which I found quite interesting to watch with the kids. Sometimes the parents may get a little naughty but it’s not something that your kids would be forbidden from watching. We are yet to watch Season 2.
- The Inbestigators – I remembered when I would read ‘Famous Five’ and ‘Secret Seven’ by Enid Blyton and love solving cases. Here, four school kids start their own detective agency and vlog (video blogging) about their adventures. It’s released just recently in 2020 so the kids will relate more with all the language. They just have 2 seasons.
- Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries – As the name suggests, it is a series of murder mysteries set in the late 1920s. The solving is done by a good looking filthy rich Australian woman. There are a few naughty puns here and there but my kids and I both enjoyed trying to guess who the culprit was in every episode. Sadly, it has only 3 seasons.
- Boss Baby – (Animated) – This series, of 3 seasons, sprung from the hit film by the same name. It is a collection of the mishaps that take place when Boss Baby decides to teach his big brother Tim about the art of business at the office.
- Pup Academy – This is a total doggy loving series with just 1 season. It’s all about dogs going to school and another young lad learning about it.
- The Worst Witch – Based on Jill Murphy’s books, a girl realizes her powers only when she enters a school for witches by chance. It has 3 seasons and my daughter has already finished watching all of them.
- The Adventures of Puss in Boots – (Animated) – Honestly, I found the adventures quite boring at times but my kids loved them; especially because it consists of a cat. Initially, I was interested but it has 6 seasons which was too much for me so my kids continued watching an episode per day. Not sure if they finished them all too.
- The Jungle Book – This set of series is all about how Bagheera and Baloo are protecting Mowgli from Sher Khan in the jungle. It has just 1 season of 52 episodes. Quite an engaging series to watch with the kids.
- Yeh Meri Family – Hindi – This series we are yet to watch because my kids need to learn to watch some Hindi series too. It is all about a boy trying to balance school, family, friendships and other challenges of growing up. Mona Singh is the mother and the series has just 1 season of 7 episodes. Let me know if you have some more series we can watch together with the kids.
Some movies that we have watched and plan to watch in the days ahead, along with the kids, are:
- Free Willy (1993) – This was the first movie I had watched in the theatre in Mumbai as I was living there for four years after the Gulf War in Kuwait. This movie is about a troubled boy who is asked to clean up his graffiti at a marine theme park and slowly bonds with a killer whale who wants no one but him to play with.
- Matilda (1996) – This movie is a good watch for young girls to teach them that standing up to bullies is what they should learn in life. Here, Matilda discovers her hidden powers and tried to put a stop to being bullied by her cruel school principal and parents.
- The Parent Trap (1998) – Two girls meet at summer camp and realize that they are twins who have been kept apart by their separated parents. They are totally different from each other but become one when they try and mend their broken family.
- Happy Feet 1 & 2 (2006 & 2011 – Animated) – These are very sweet movies of how penguins love their own kind. Even my 3-year-old enjoyed watching them. It teaches them about family as well as team-work.
- Ratatouille (2007 – Animated) – This one is a cute movie of a rat who develops a taste for fine food. The movie teaches kids how to handle obstacles in order to achieve their goals. Puss in Boots (2017) and Hotel Transylvania (2012) are among other animated movies that the kids will enjoy watching.
- The Karate Kid (2010) – This is a really nice movie to watch with kids because it teaches them about discipline, respect and hard work. It is a remake of the 1984 classic.
- Benji (2018) – This movie is emotional for some. It is about a helpful dog who tries to heal a broken family when a young boy and his sister get into some serious danger.
- The Christmas Chronicles (2018) – Kurt Russell is Santa who tries to bring joy to many kids when a boy and his sister accidentally crash his sleigh. It is a lovely movie about kindness and compassion during the festive season. Check a few more Christmas movies here.
- Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) – The famous jungle boy who is raised by animals and who tries to confront enemies and his own kind – humans. You may have a mix of emotions watching this one.
- Annie (1982) – This movie is as old as I am but it still has a lovely message in it. The power of being positive in the worst of situations. The power to capture hearts with unquenchable optimism. Personally, I think that this is totally apt for times like these. Enjoy!
Of course, there are other ways you can bond with your kids during normal holidays but I thought one or two hours a day for screen time, during these covid19 days, should not be frowned upon. After all, we are all trying our level best to stay home until things get better.
