While my Tamillian friends mourn the death of a woman of great prestige, I sit with a cup of coffee and my legs folded on the table and wonder how we women are so different from each other. Although there are some who would give their all to help and do good, there are some who would even alter their so called ‘principles’ according to convenience. Let me elaborate.

A few years ago, Clara was married to the love of her life, Cade, but her mother was not very happy about it. The son-in-law wasn’t of a status she approved of. So, despite being married in court, the two love birds were forbidden from living with each other until the holy nuptials had taken place. Clara’s mother even went to the extent of calling up her daughter’s mother-in-law to make sure she told her son he was not allowed to live with his legal wife or be seen together in public, for that matter. Apparently, people were watching and talking about them not being married in Church. Clara’s mother always spoke against Cade. Clara was upset and her married life had just begun. All this created a drift between her husband and her mother already. They were eventually married in Church.

As time went by, Clara’s sister, Jane, grew up to be a total failed brat. Due to circumstances that took place when they were little, Jane’s temper was never corrected and being the youngest, her tantrums and fights would always be covered up by Clara and her parents. This proved to be dangerous, not only for others, but for Jane herself too. Her temper almost got her boyfriend in the hospital, but again, her acts were covered up by her family.

Jane began getting her lovers home for sleepovers while her family was present. Cade, her brother-in-law would visit and meet them, like some and not like some. It was a phase, he thought. After Clara delivered, she and her husband came to stay with Jane and her mother during the time Jane brought home one particular character that no one really liked, except for her mother. John, her lover, came from a wealthy family and spoke the common mother tongue with ease. He also cooked and massaged his potential mother-in-law’s legs every night. There began a bond between Jane’s mother and the prospective son-in-law. They were engaged overnight and allowed to live with Jane’s parents.

Meanwhile, Clara delivered and returned to her home with her husband, Cade. He was not very happy with the new developments at the in-laws’. How could Clara’s mother permit John to live there without having a legal nuptial ceremony like she wanted for her first child? Where were all those people who were supposedly talking about Clara and him being together without being married in Church? Does a wealthy person get away with what they want? Would you allow a person who serves you to have a live in relationship with your daughter just because he is culturally sound according to you? Where is that severity which was present when Clara was in love?

This only worsened the relationship between Cade and his mother in law. Was this necessary? I truly believe that if we have principles we want to follow or force others to follow; we have to with no exceptions. Otherwise, there is no reason we should stress on something we cannot fulfill ourselves. Or maybe that’s karma slapping you right in the face for making your daughter’s life miserable. Even though there are different types of women, we women behave differently with different people but I think if you have a true inner being, you would apply the same principle to everyone without being bias.

Also, while watching these television series I’ve observed that, in reality, there are some women who have gone through hardships and make sure no one else, they love, does; while some women want everyone to suffer like they did. Now isn’t that being pure selfish? This may have not been physical abuse but it sure was a mental torture. And people wonder why the women of today confidently walk out of relationships!

But, off late, I think men of today are sometimes tortured too! Hmmmmmm…..
