Women, for centuries now have taken long breaks from their corporate careers due to personal commitments like marriage, in-laws/parents dependency, kids and voluntary work or simply to follow their passions. These breaks could range from 2 to 15 years. And, getting back to work is sometimes not only discouraged by their families, but by organizations too.
As 40% of the technology workforce in India need to upskill themselves every 5 years, companies, generally looking to hire, look for experienced people and not really for women who have lost touch with any updates or technology upgrades in the business world.
But, recently, I came across an impressive initiative called VMInclusion Taara (in association with Women Who Code) by the global technology leader VMware India. VMware is a 22 year old company which started a unique return-to-work program for women, in January 2019. It aims at helping 15,000 females to upskill themselves and get back into the corporate world if they seriously wish to. They have already seen over 8000 women enroll for the course since then. The numbers have shot up in 2020.
The program offers technical education and certification courses on digital workspace technologies.
Technologies covered in levels:
Candidates would get certified on VMware Technology (Basics, Intermediate & Advanced Certification) and become a VMware Certified Professional.
Taara has recently introduced a Soft Skill training program that helps you prepare to be a confident corporate. Recording of all webinars are available on VMware Social, which also acts as an external community for Taara candidates to help one another.
This online course, worth USD 3,500/-, is absolutely FREE and can be done from the comfort of your home. The duration depends on your dedication and determination. Timings are flexible. Some successful Taara graduates have finished it in 3 to 4 months while many have taken around 8 months, due to a couple of breaks in between.
If you want to get your career back and have an interest in the IT concepts, coding, cloud computing and virtualization, or are a female college graduate who hasn’t been able to find a job for 6 months or more, you can register here. Age is no bar. The program also supports women, with no prior IT experience, who want to learn and begin their careers in digital technologies. You also have to be an Indian citizen residing in India. This course is also open to those who identify themselves as women (she/her).
The certification is valid only for 30 days from date of course completion. While there are a few industry partners who have come forward and agreed to select from Taara graduates, Taara does not guarantee a job opportunity and has no contractual binding to any graduate. Fortunately, many companies are opening their doors to women, so pray hard and apply!
In the spirit of empowering women, I personally thought that this would help motivate those interested in getting back on their feet by making them aware of this opportunity. We had a virtual meeting with Ms. Rashmi Adukoorie, Head – Communications, VMware India, where she detailed out the whole initiative and let us decide whether we wanted to keep it to ourselves or spread the word and uplift other women. I was in total awe especially because it is free.

With the fast growth of technologies and the fast pace of obsolescence, it is critical for everyone to constantly update their skills. These courses from VMWare are really interesting and seem geared to equip the participants with up to date knowledge and skills.
