BOOK REVIEW – TWISTED TALES AND TURNS BY SMITA DAS JAIN

TWISTED TALES AND TURNS BY SMITA DAS JAIN

The cover was velvety red and had a tiny painting of a woman in front of a window.

BOOK DETAILS

Name: Twisted Tales and Turns (A Journey Through the Unexpected)
Author: Smita Das Jain
Format: Softcopy
Number of pages: 160
Availability: Amazon (Buy the paperback here or the Kindle version here)
Rating: 4/5

TITLE & SUBTITLES

The title did interest me as I assumed it would be a book of twisted tales of horror and the outer realm. The subtitles were apt for the stories that followed in the respective sections.

LANGUAGE

All the stories were written in Indian-English with the mention of a few Indian songs which makes the book great but only for the Indian audience.

BLURB

The book is a collection of 20 well-written stories; some mysterious, some sad, some scary and some happy. It is divided into 4 sections and each one belongs to a different niche. The first section (Out of this World) consists of stories about the afterlife. The second (Not Too Far into the Future) is about the future of the world with stories about robots, how Mars is helping the spread of Coronavirus, etc. The third (All Doesn’t End Well) tells us how things do not always end up the way we want them to. The last section (Love Comes in All Hues) gives us sweet stories of different forms of love.

REASONS I LIKED THE BOOK

*It was a quick and easy read.
*I liked the first few stories of the afterlife as they were a bit emotional.
*I related quite well with the 6th story where the woman is questioned about her decision to be a homemaker in the twenty-third century, rather than having a full-time job.
*The author has weaved lovely stories around the special-needs category.
*I found the ideas behind the stories to be new and interesting.
*She mentioned our popular TBR list. Hahaha!

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

*The font colour in some parts was lighter so viewing was a bit difficult.
*Perhaps a few more stories could have been added to the book as a whole.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I found this book interesting from the title itself. Many of the stories didn’t involve horror (as I had expected) but I liked the stories nevertheless. The book seemed to consist of many stories that have been recognized at different writing contests. I’m in awe of the kind of stories that the author has liberally weaved around various world issues from the past few years. A must-read!

I have read all her books and must tell you that she is one of the most underrated writers in India. However her books are slowly gaining the acceptance that she deserves.
