5RULESofVirtual-Classroom ETIQUETTE

Virtual-classroom etiquette refers to the manner in which your children should behave when an online class is in session. However mature you think your kids are, it is always advisable to keep a check on them while they are online. Also, once they understand the points below, make sure you ask them the following questions after class or at the end of the day.

How was class today? Did you have any issues connecting? Do you have any projects or homework that you may need help with? What are the annoying things you experienced during class?

5 RULES OF VIRTUAL-CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

Besides feeling connected to you, you will also be aware of what’s going on in your child’s school life. This latest method of learning is quite new to them as well. So, a little attention from your side could help them get used to it with ease. Initially, your kids would have to be reminded every now and then, but soon they will follow the guidelines below naturally.

20 WAYS WE KEPT THE KIDS ENGAGED DURING THE HOLIDAYS

BE PRESENTABLE

Just because they are at home doesn’t mean they can attend their classes shabbily. Ask your child to freshen up and get ready, as they normally would, before leaving the house. Mostly, teachers or instructors prefer to view their students to teach them. Make sure your kids are aware that they are NOT to attend classes in pyjamas or with uncombed hair. Being presentable is a basic example of possessing good etiquette.

BE PUNCTUAL

Logging in late or leaving early is disrespecting the timings given, just like in school. It is advisable to log in to the meeting 5 minutes prior to the time given, just in case of technical glitches. Your kids cannot call you in the middle of school to bring them anything. Likewise, they shouldn’t do so during an online class either. Make sure they keep basic materials ready, especially pen/pencil, a writing pad/book, a ruler, a sharpener, and an eraser before their online classes begin. A water bottle on the side would also help.

SHOW INTERESTSHOW INTERESTN A QUIET AND WELL LIT SPACE

I have seen kids sitting on the bed or relaxing on the sofa while attending their classes. This posture tends to make them lethargic and uninterested in the topic at hand. Therefore, it is important to make sure your kids have a well-lit and quiet place allotted for online classes. If possible, a study table with a chair is an apt setting for them. Also, it would be helpful if you informed everyone at home to avoid loud noises, which could disrupt your child’s focus on the lessons taught.

FOLLOW RULES

Make sure you attend their first class so that you are also aware of the rules given. Mostly, the rules would be to raise a hand if you want to speak, no chatting, no interrupting the teacher while she is speaking, no fun backgrounds, ask permission to leave your chair, and avoid constant shifting. Teach your child how to use the MUTE BUTTON and when and how to unmute themselves. Even though your kids may not be forbidden from several other things, you can always advise them to avoid non-class activities, like eating, drinking, sibling/pet introductions, or house tours for their friends, during class.

CONSIDER ONLINE RESTRICTIONS

As the virtual-classroom concept is new for many, try and understand that the teacher will not be able to give attention to each and every child, every single day, especially if the strength of the class exceeds 20 heads. Talk to your kids and explain to them why they should be attentive and disciplined, and also ask them to write down their questions so that they can clear their doubts when the time is given for the same. I’m sure the teacher will be happy to answer them all.

Though convenient for many, online classes have their own disadvantages. In the beginning, my kids were excited about the online classes, but they were also tired of them soon. How much can a person stare at a screen? Also, they missed meeting their friends, hanging out with them, etc. Offline hangouts have a different charm, don’t they?

But, certain situations do call for online classes. Therefore, it is important to follow the rules to make the online classes go smoothly without stressing out the teachers, too.

How are you doing with the online classroom system? Is it working out for you, or is your child complaining about some issues they have? Do check with them, and you may realize that they may be quite confused about the same. With a little guidance from you, they will soon be comfortably independent to handle it on their own. After all, we have to make sure they enjoy their classes online, at least when it is required, right?

I am associated with a school where they counsel teachers once in a week. The teachers who take online classes face a lot of issues and they tell them to me! I will share it with them so that they can pass this to the parents!

Yes please do that. It would help at least a few people wake up and act on the same. Teachers are not robots anyway.

Well done on this post. I did a similar post. Now that the new norm requires adapting to technology. This also means having to teach our children things we thought they would learn on their own with time. Very useful.

A few days back a video of a teacher being bullied by students while taking online class went viral. This is a very sad and disturbing state and we as parent should make our kid’s realize the significance of proper etiquette for online classes too.

Parents responsibility is so much important in online classes. And following restrictions is utmost importance as few kids can disturb the entire session with one setting.

Absolutely practical points mentioned. Place is very important. Though it’s overwhelming and confusing initially, kids did get used to the etiquette of online learning, especially “raise hand” to answer.

Making my son sit attentively for the whole duration of his online classes comes as a challenge to me. Though we sit in a well lit quiet corner, well dressed up, but still, after some time he loses his focus.

This post is a must for every parents whose kids are attending online learning. You are right the very first we have to make them understand is online learning is just an alternate form of learning. It’s not fun time. They have to sincere and serious about it the way they are towards in person learning.
