While the pesky pandemic has been stressful for many, quite a few have taken the risk of travelling out of the country. And, some of us just prefer a weekend getaway close to home.
I don’t think I’ve reviewed any of the resorts I’ve been to in the past but just felt like writing about the wonderful experience we had at Machaan.
So, a bunch of us drove from Bangalore to Sakleshpur to spend the weekend at Machaan Plantation Resort. We all needed a break from the daily (500+ days) cooking and cleaning routine. Some of us took our kids along while some decided to have a honeymoon weekend away from theirs. A couple of us were also working from there during the day.

Machaan Plantation Resort is a picturesque resort cushioned by a 100-acre coffee plantation property around it. It is located in Sakleshpur, Karnataka, India, which is approximately a 5-hour drive (250kms) from Bangalore. The main attraction here is the view of the lush green hills which have a misty look when it is about to rain at the resort. The hills are green under the sun and spooky when they are covered with dark clouds. The night sky is amazing.
When the weather is good, the resort encourages visitors to try the starter trek called the MPR View Trek; a beautiful trail lined with trees and woods on both sides. As it rained every now and then, we did not go on the trek or jump in the pool. We had our own events lined up during the evenings, so, we skipped singing by the bonfire, too.
The resort currently has an outdoor swimming pool, a restaurant, a lounge, a garden and a scenic walking path. The auditorium was under construction, so, our events were held in the restaurant area.
The closest airport is the Mangalore International Airport.
COVID-19 UPDATE: The staff is masked at all times. They wash their hands and sanitize public areas regularly. Also, as an extra precaution, their temperatures and symptoms are checked every morning.
When we visited, we booked all the 4 structures which had 4 detached rooms each. One such structure was allotted for those of us with kids, so, our little ones (aged 5-10) had a ball of a time together. The rooms are air-conditioned and spacious with two beds or a queen-sized bed and a sofa-cum-bed; good for at least 4 people. They also provide extra bedding, if required. I loved that each room had its own sit-out balcony.
Each room would cost you around Rs 12,000/- per night (inclusive of taxes).
For lunch and dinner, they served good (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) local dishes, other Indian foods and special meals for kids. The breakfast was South Indian, but they prepared omelettes for those of us who needed it.
To book, call +91 8970 33 55 44 or email them [email protected] or you can directly visit Machaan Plantation Resort, Nelagalli Village, Devaladakere Post, Hanbal, Hobli, Sakleshpur, 573165.
The resort was a wonderful place to spend time in but perhaps they could include a few more activities for the times when the weather decides to make trekking and lighting bonfires impossible. The food was good but the quality could be looked into, especially as they cater to large groups. We spent a lot of time in the restaurant, with no disturbances from anyone. We danced and sang like crazy till the wee hours of the night. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend getaway after a long time.

There is a Machaan in Pune as well and for a moment I thought you had driven from Bangalore all the way to Pune! Sounds like a perfect place to get away from the four walls that now, sometimes, feel a bit much – even to an introvert like me.
Yeah they have a few properties around India.
Next time I am visiting my parents in Banglore, I am definitely going to Sakleshpura.
