EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TREKKING AROUND PUNE

Pune being the historical and cultural capital of Maharashtra also happens to be a haven for nature lovers and thrill seekers. As it is situated near the Sahyadri Mountain Range, it is able to cater to amateurs as well as professional trekkers due to its easy-to-hard trekking trails. Pune has mild climate throughout the year which makes trekking possible at any time. From the monsoons when everything is green to the calm winters which are perfect for long walks; there are hiking routes suitable for everyone’s taste and physical capabilities.

Trekking around Pune is not just a fun activity, it also unites people with their natural surroundings, educates them on the history of the area, and uplifts their moods. The city is loved by those who love trekking as there are many forts, hills, and green forests around it.

SOME POPULAR TREKS AROUND PUNE

There are several interesting paths one can take while planning routes for trekking around Pune. Some popular treks include:

Sinhagad Fort Trek:

This famous route goes through thick jungle and rocky terrain, towards the ancient Sinhagad fort. If you’re reasonably fit, you can complete this easy to moderate-level trek in two hours while enjoying panoramic views of the landscape along with a glimpse into the fort’s rich past.

Rajmachi Fort Walk:

This easy-level trek in the Sahyadri mountain range is a quiet and pleasant walk that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced trekkers alike. You can stroll across idyllic hamlets and lush green valleys to the majestic fort, which gives you breathtaking views amid serenity.

Lohagad Fort Hike:

This is one of those simple treks that combine natural beauty with important history. The Lohagad Fort Hike is famous for its smooth terrain surrounded by lush landscapes. Hikers will pass through thick jungles along old pathways on their way to the beautiful fort where they can relax and enjoy the stunning views.

Tikona Fort Climb:

The triangular-shaped mountain attracts hikers with an exhilarating yet attainable trekking experience. After about half an hour from the base camp, you will reach the first gate of the main fort (with caves hidden by plants) from where climbers will ascend steep paths and verdant slopes till they reach the top. It is advisable to carry plenty of water so you can sit back and enjoy the view of the scenic Sahyadri peaks and lakes from up here.

IMPORTANT TIPS FOR TREKKING AROUND PUNE

Before going trekking around Pune, you should properly plan routes, attire, etc., and take safety precautions, so that you can have a great trekking experience. Here are some tips that could support your planning:

Packing Essentials:

Pack light but efficiently. Ensure you have the basic requirements like a weight-distributing rucksack with water, snacks, suitable clothing, sturdy shoes, a first-aid kit, navigational aids, etc. Carrying a multi-tool device, sunscreen lotion, insect repellents, etc. may also come in handy.

Fitness Preparation:

At least 3 to 6 months before the climb, make sure to exercise regularly so you develop power and strength. It would help if you could do short inclined hikes gradually increasing the difficulty level every week. Often, taking the stairs (instead of the elevator) also helps to some extent.

Weather Considerations:

Do monitor the area’s weather updates and pack accordingly. Carry clothes as well as appropriate gear to protect yourself from the heat, cold, or rain.

Safety Precautions:

Trekking with other people is safer than doing it alone. If possible, try and learn simple survival techniques and ensure that your navigational aids are in good condition. Carry back-ups just in case. Also, whether in a group or alone, it helps to let a couple of people (on the ground) know about your route, estimated time of return, contact number, etc.

Environmental Preservation:

It is important to learn about the seven principles of ‘Leave No Trace’ so that you minimize your impact on the environment. This includes proper garbage disposal, conserving wilderness, reducing noise pollution, not disturbing fauna vegetation, being considerate of others present, etc.

PUNE TREKKING GUIDES AND ORGANIZATIONS

Pune has various hiking clubs which consist of experienced hikers and nature lovers. Joining these groups will allow you to meet new people with similar interests. You can also take part in planned walks with others and get tips from seasoned walkers. Personalized consulting and expertise are provided by qualified trekking guides. These instructors’ knowledge of geography, safety, and history will help in many ways. Trekking websites offer hiking information including forums and platforms where people share their experiences like trail conditions, route descriptions, etc. that can assist you in making informed decisions so that your trekking experience is smoother and more pleasurable for you.

OTHER TREKKING DESTINATIONS NEAR PUNE

Western Ghats:

Discover the breathtaking scenery and biodiversity of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Western Ghats cover lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and stunning views. Some of these include Mahabaleshwar, Matheran, Bhimashankar, and more.

Sahyadri Ranges:

Take a hike from Pune into the mountain ranges of Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka states. Due to their challenging terrains, significant cultural ruins, and panoramic sceneries, hikers are said to love Harishchandragad, Kalsubai Peak, and Ratangad Fort, among others. Pune is such a lovely place and so nice to see good trekking options. I am not very fond of trekking – the climbing part, but the experience after reaching the top is pretty cool. I have done it twice or thrice and it was super tiring!

Pune seems to be blessed with beautiful locations for trekking. I guess we need to plan a whole week individually of travel to find the true beauty of these places 🙂

I stayed in Pune for around 10 years and these places are best to trek, however, I missed going. My friends usually go on trekking and loved the experience.

I just love everything about Pune. Being a Maharashtrian is definitely one reasons but along with it, the climate, and the perfect blend of modern living and maintaining its cultural heritage. Luckily, my sister has shifted to Pune and has done a couple of treks. I heard many good experiences she had. This post will come handy for her.
