Recently, I decided to take up a full-time online job because I had sufficient time on my hands while the kids were in school. Then all of a sudden, schools shut down and I had less time to work. Then, playgrounds closed and kids had to be indoors at all times. I found myself entertaining and feeding my 7-year-old and 3-year-old for 14 hours every day without a break. Luckily, they snooze for 10 hours. So besides the activities, they are required to do in a week, I have curated a list of Amazon Prime shows and movies that we watch as a family, or just me with the kids for a couple of hours a day. After some yelling, cleaning, cooking and more, I do need to sit sometimes.
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) – While browsing for some movies to watch with the kids, we saw this trailer and got quite interested in the flying cutlery and weird creatures. My daughter, who has watched some of the Harry Potter movies, said it was similar to those movies. David Yates is the director. We also enjoyed part 2, The Crimes of Grindelwald.
- The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air – This was a series we used to watch in Kuwait when I was around 7 or 8 years old. It is awesome to watch with the family. It has 6 seasons but we have just begun watching and are at the end of season 1. It teaches the children a lot about respect for family and how to be down to earth despite the wealth.
- The Middle – This is a ten-year-old series about a woman trying to raise a family while lowering her expectations. She is middle-aged, from the middle-class and lives in the middle of the city. This one is on our list and yet to be watched once we are done with the on-going series we are already watching. It has 9 seasons so it will surely last you for quite a few weeks unless you start binge-watching.
- Just add Magic – This series has some weird numbering and some episodes are unavailable but my daughter enjoyed watching the suspense and thrilling adventures of the three girls with magic. Just add Magic: Mystery City is a sequel that has another three kids solving some mysteries.
- Young Sheldon – If you’ve watched Big Bang Theory, you know who Sheldon Cooper is. In this show, he is a 9-year-old boy trying to grow up between people with moderate or low IQs. This is a fun watch with the kids because it teaches them about various ways of getting along with other kids and accepting others how they are. We are on season 3.
- Bananas in Pyjamas – This is a story about B1 and B2 who love helping others, working together and having fun. There are 2 seasons and it is quite a fun watch for the kids while you can probably cut vegetables while supervising. Hahaha!
- The Gruffalo (2009 Animated) – This is a nice film that lasts for half an hour only. It’s about a magical tale of a mouse in the woods. The Gruffalo’s Child (2011) is a sequel about the kid, who ignores his father’s warning and goes out into the snow in search of the big bad mouse. This also lasts for half an hour. Room on a Broom (2012) is another one you can let them be hooked on for half an hour.
- Richie Rich (1994) – This is about the adventures of an extremely rich boy who wants to do good in the world. Besides being fun, the movie shows our kids that friends and family are more important than treasures. Home Alone is something I’m hunting for to watch with the kids. Let me know where I can find it.
- Stuart Little (1999) – This is a family classic about a mouse who came for supper and wound up staying with the kind family. My kids totally loved it.
- Jurassic Park 1, 2 & 3 (1993, 1997 & 2001) – This is better for 13 years and above because there are scary scenes when my kids began crying, but they still wanted to continue watching until the end. It’s all about dinosaurs messing up an amusement park. And then more dinosaurs and more breath-taking visual effects. King Kong (2005) is another movie where you will enjoy the special effects as well as the amusing gorilla.
Amazon Prime has plenty of kid stuff that you can put on for them and vanish. Series like Hey Dugee, My Little Pony, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny, Peppa Pig, Dinosaur Train, Popeye and many more. Then there are movies that you can let the kids watch by themselves. Movies like The Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Storks, Scooby-Doo: The Movie, Shrek, The Adventures of Pinocchio, Yogi Bear, A Christmas Carol and many more on Amazon Prime have proved to be a lifesaver even when I want to get some sleep around the kids.
Do you have some more series and movies on Amazon Prime that are worth watching with the kids? Let me know in the comments below.
